AWARENESS! - International Alexander Awareness Week and Back Care Awareness Week 2014

The focus for Alexander Technique Awareness Week this year (October 6th - 12th) is stress - "Stop, Think, Restore & Energise in Semi-Supine". Semi-supine describes the lying down advocated by Alexander Technique teachers which can be extremely helpful, especially for those suffering pain, stress etc.

"Back In The Office" is the theme for this year's Back Care Awareness Week.

Back Care Awareness Week 2013

"Caring for the Carers" is the theme for this year's Back Care Awareness Week (October 7th - 11th). More than 70% of the UK's unpaid carers now suffer from back pain according to Back Care's magazine Talk Back, in which there is also an article about Alexander Technique.

International Alexander Technique Awareness Week this year is October 14th - 20th. The theme is "Look, Feel and Grow Younger".

NEW CURRENCY OPTION!

Alexander Technique for Life is the proud owner of a Bristol Pound account. This means it is now possible to pay for lessons using either the usual old pounds sterling or the exciting new Bristol Pounds.

ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE ON THE BBC

Antiques Roadshow presenter and auctioneer Mark Poltimore spoke enthusiastically about the Alexander Technique in response to presentation of a portrait of F.M.Alexander. Several common misconceptions about AT are demonstrated in the clip!

Bethan is also co-facilitating Shadow Work with Marianne Hill - a very different approach from Alexander Technique. There is a new Women's Shadow Work Journey beginning at the beginning of February 2014. Click here for further information, and for the front of the flyer or see Marianne's website.

STUDY SHOWS WIDER BENEFITS OF ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE LESSONS FOR PEOPLE WITH CHRONIC PAIN

"TAKING CHARGE; CHOOSING A NEW DIRECTION. A SERVICE EVALUATION OF ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE LESSONS FOR PAIN CLINIC PATIENTS (SEAT): AN APPROACH TO PAIN MANAGEMENT."

The findings of the report are positive, bringing more evidence of what so many people already know; learning the Alexander Technique can have a positive effect on the lives of those in chronic pain.

The study looked at the use of AT lessons as one of the options for patients attending the Pain Management Clinic in St Michael's Hospital, Bristol. Bethan and four other STAT-registered teachers gave six weekly lessons to patients who were referred to them by the pain clinic consultants. The report concludes that "...the Alexander Technique teaching service is feasible, acceptable, and beneficial in terms of improving service users' [patients] health outcomes and management of pain..." Read the press release on the articles page.

POISED FOR LIFE - INTERNATIONAL ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE AWARENESS WEEK

Each year there is a different theme for the Alexander Technique awareness week. As the name suggests, the aim is to raise awareness of the Alexander Technique and how we can all benefit.

The focus this year is particularly on children - this includes pregnancy, childbirth, children themselves and their teachers and parents. It is from 8th - 14th October 2012.

Keep an eye out for special offers and events, or sign up for the newsletter below (there is usually a newsletter sent out 2 - 3 times a year).

ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE 'TASTER' SESSIONS

Alexander Technique taster sessions will be available at the Montpelier Bean Feast (in Bristol, not France!) which is apparently an 18th century event that has recently been resurrected. It is held in Montpelier Park, St Andrews Road, Montpelier from 2-7pm on Saturday 8th September. The perfect opportunity to try out the Alexander Technique for yourself.

SEAT REPORT PUBLISHED

"TAKING CHARGE; CHOOSING A NEW DIRECTION. A SERVICE EVALUATION OF ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE LESSONS FOR PAIN CLINIC PATIENTS (SEAT): AN APPROACH TO PAIN MANAGEMENT."

This report looks at the use of AT lessons as one of the options for patients attending the Pain Management Clinic in St Michael's Hospital, Bristol. Five STAT-registered teachers (of which Bethan was one) gave six weekly lessons to patients who were referred to them by the consultants. The report is very encouraging, concluding that "...the Alexander Technique teaching service is feasible, acceptable, and beneficial in terms of improving service users' [patients] health outcomes and management of pain..."

ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE FOR NECK PAIN: 'ATLAS' CLINICAL RESEARCH

From the press release: "Clinical research has already shown that lessons in the Alexander Technique lead to significant reductions in the pain and disability associated with chronic back pain. Now a new clinical trial will investigate how effective Alexander Technique lessons are for people with chronic neck pain."

Of course, Alexander Technique teachers have seen how learning the Alexander Technique can help people with neck pain, so this research is great news. The trial is being conducted in the North of England so if you have contacts who are up there suffering with neck pain let them know!

97 YEARS OLD AND STILL TEACHING ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE

Elisabeth Walker was interviewed briefly on Radio 4's "Women's Hour" talking about, amongst other things, her AT teacher training - with F.M. Alexander himself. She is a lovely lady and an incredible teacher who has trained many AT teachers herself, taught all over the world and been chair of STAT (Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique).

"BACK TO LIFE" PACKAGES FOR PEOPLE WITH CHRONIC PAIN

This integrated approach combines Alexander Technique lessons with massage and bodywork to help you gain long-term relief from pain as well as feeling better in the short term. The collaboration with Jenny Dalhuijsen (massage therapist) arose from the desire to make a difference to the many people who 'put up with' ongoing back pain, but applies equally to others with neck pain, knee pain and so on. Unique to Bristol!

You can read this for more details. The package is individually tailored, so feel free to get in contact with any queries.

'POSH' USING ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE

Victoria Beckham, suffering from wearing super-high heels, has turned to the Alexander Technique for help.

"She has reportedly turned to the Alexander Technique...It is used by many actors, singers and dancers and is a method of changing everyday movement habits to improve freedom of movement, balance, co-ordination and posture, and to reduce tension.

A friend said: 'Victoria has been working hard on getting a straight back and correcting her terrible posture. You can tell that something is working as the years of Victoria's shoulders being slumped are over, she's walking straighter now.' Mrs Beckham, 35, suffered from so much foot strain that doctors advised her to have an urgent bunionectomy...The Alexander Technique has helped her alleviate some of the foot pain..." You can read the Daily Mail article here.
